Prep roundup: Rams McGee and Peters win titles at Hoffman Estates boys track invite

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Glenbard East

Maurice McGee won the 400-meter dash May 3 at Hoffman Estates’ Pete Reiff Invitational. Jack Peters also picked up a win in the 1,600. Vince Booth was second in the 800. Booth, Tyler Rossel, Jake Schaefer and Drew Mikel teamed up for second in the 4 x 400 relay. Peters, Schaefer, Meraj Siddiqui and Mikel were second in the 4 x 800. The 4 x 100 relay team of Sam Aparicio, Geri Hasanaj, Rossel and Kyle Olsen placed third. Aparicio also was third in the long jump. The Rams placed third in the nine-team meet.

Montini

John Brady was the Broncos’ top finisher Friday at the DuPage County Meet hosted by York. Brady placed fourth in the long jump.

Willowbrook

Matt Burns won both the 200-meter dash and the 400 at the DuPage County meet hosted by York on Friday. Burns ran the 200 in 22.80 and the 400 in 49.94. Matt McNamara picked up the Warriors’ other win on the day by throwing 153 feet, 9 inches in the discus. Jake Bloemke was second in the 100.

BASEBALL

Willowbrook

The Warriors may have fallen out of the conference race, but they played spoiler and knocked Downers Grove South from the top spot in the league. Willowbrook won, 11-5, in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with a three-hit day from Dom Battaglia. Mike Rothmund, Jake Cady, Kevin Johnson and Dom McDonnell each had two hits.

The Mustangs pulled even in the series with an 11-3 win in Game 2, but Cady was the hero in the rubber game Monday to give the Warriors the series win. Willowbrook scored in the bottom of the sixth and Cady pitched a complete game shutout in the 1-0 Warrior victory.

Willowbrook also beat Proviso East, 8-2, on Tuesday in a makeup game from earlier in the season. The Warriors are in third place in the Gold with an 8-7 record heading into the final conference series against Leyden this weekend.

SOFTBALL

Glenbard East

The Rams split a doubleheader with Glenbard West on Saturday, winning Game 1 3-0. Brittany Plimmer had two hits and Kara Tadda scattered 10 hits in a complete game. East lost Game 2 18-4.

In conference play, the Rams lost to Wheaton North, 3-1, on Monday, beat West Chicago, 11-6, on Tuesday and lost to Naperville North, 5-1, on Wednesday. In the win over the Wildcats, Megan Cotterill was 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Plimmer, Alyssa Haught, Angela Greco and Dana Camp also had two hits. Cotterill homered for East’s only run in the loss to the Huskies.

Montini

The Lady Broncos ran into their first losing streak of the season with three one-run losses. Chicago Christian beat Montini 7-6 on Friday, Metea Valley beat the Broncos 6-5 on Monday and St. Francis made it three losses in a row with a 6-5 win on Tuesday. Montini took out its aggravation with a 16-2 win over St. Edward on Wednesday. Isabella Alexander, Cristina Barrett and Lauren Trojnar had three hits each in the win, and Alexander had five RBIs.

Willowbrook

Darian Pelsor didn’t allow an earned run and had eight strikeouts in a West Suburban Gold win over Hinsdale South on May 3. The Warriors won, 11-1, with Pelsor adding two hits and a home run and Delaney Pelsor went 3-for-4. Sam Schmidt, Alyssa Ressinger and Jordan Marczewski each homered in the win. Willowbrook also beat Proviso West, 12-0, on Monday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Glenbard East

The Rams were shutout, 1-0, against Wheaton Warrenville South on May 3 and, 2-0, to the Lyons Township on Saturday. East picked up its first DuPage Valley Conference win by taking out West Aurora, 2-0, on Tuesday. Jess DeJong scored both goals in the win. The Rams finished the regular season with a 10-5-4 record, 1-3-3 in the DVC.

East will take on Downers Grove North in a Lyons Township regional semifinal Tuesday. The Rams are the No. 7 seed in the Hinsdale Central sectional while the Trojans are the No. 10 seed. It is a rematch of last year’s regional semifinal meeting when the Trojans upset the Rams, 1-0.

Montini

The Broncos went 1-2 at the Glenbrook Cup in Northbrook over the weekend. Montini beat Proviso West, 1-0, but lost to Kenosha Bradford 2-0 and eventual champion Glenbrook South 8-0.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Glenbard East

The Rams lost to Wheaton North 20-25, 21-25 on May 2. Joey Farrell had 12 kills and Cory Soehren had 20 assists in the loss. East lost consecutive DuPage Valley Conference matches for the first time this season by falling to DVC-leader Naperville North 22-25, 16-25 on Tuesday. Farrell had 10 kills and Seth Quam added six.

Willowbrook

The Warriors knocked off district-rival Addison Trail 15-25, 27-25, 25-20 to improve to 4-1 in the West Suburban Gold. Ben Wozniak had 12 kills and Austin Kirchner added 11 for the Warriors. Kyle Dewyer had 28 assists and 14 digs to lead the team in both categories. Willowbrook, the No. 13 seed in the Proviso West sectional, opens the playoffs Monday against No. 20 IMSA and will play No. 4 Glenbard West if they win.

BOYS TENNIS

Glenbard East

After taking third at the eight-team Fenton Invite on Saturday, the Rams knocked off Wheaton North 4-3 in a DuPage Valley Conference dual match on Tuesday. Nick Cornell picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Brent Westergren at No. 1 singles. Nate Delawder and Shehdad Khundmiri also picked up singles wins for the Rams. Shaun Lee Pascual and Mac Harrell won at No. 2 doubles.

BADMINTON

Glenbard East

The Rams won their sectional Friday with 17 points. Rachel Schlitter beat teammate Kinga Glowik in the final of the singles draw. Kaely Cantus and Janah Sprenger-Mahal teamed up to win the doubles draw. Emily Fulton and Elizabeth Schuck finished fourth in doubles to qualify for state.

Willowbrook

The Warriors hosted and won a sectional on Friday and advanced the maximum number of participants to state. Sandy Hernandez knocked off teammate Amanda Wendt in the singles final. Vanesha Mistry and Brooke Bimber were second in doubles and Leah Kania and Kelsey Cizek were third.

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Willowbrook

The Warriors competed in the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional May 1, but had to wait through the weekend to see who would be at-large qualifiers for state. In addition to Kaewe Winstead’s automatic qualification on parallel bars and pommel horse, Winstead earned at-large spots in the all-around, floor and horizontal bar. Other qualifiers were Ben Golz (floor) and Colton Bach (vault).

BOYS LACROSSE

Montini

The Broncos split a pair of games with Wheaton schools earlier in the week. On Monday, they beat Wheaton Academy, 8-3, and lost to St. Francis on Tuesday.
