Sewer grate thefts plague West Chicago

WEST CHICAGO – Several storm sewer grates have been stolen in West Chicago, prompting a warning from officials of the dangers caused by these missing grates.

Removing the grates causes various hazards, especially to pedestrians and bicyclists. When city crews remove them for maintenance, they put up barricades to warn residents that the grates are not there.

The thefts have occurred on both the north and south sides of the city, with many of them targeting the Westgrove subdivision.

If residents notice someone removing a grate without leaving a safety device, they should contact the West Chicago Police Department at 630-293-2222.
