Letter: Water fees a 'teachable moment'

Published: Wednesday, July 31, 2013 4:54 p.m. CDT

To the Editor:

RE: The stormwater fees for churches, I wish they would consider this a "teachable moment," now that the stormwater utility has their congregations' attention.

There are tremendous issues impacting our water today, and this could precipitate discussions and education on these issues. Where better for this discussion than in the churches and synagogues where we acknowledge water as a gift from God and use it often in our liturgies?

Also, the various congregations could initiate "parking donations" of some kind, which would go toward either paying the stormwater fees or re-surfacing parking lots with a permeable pavement.

For those of us who love the Creator, it's not merely a duty, but a privilege to care for creation.
