Girls golfers from across the area are on the course for the 2013 season. The season has just started, but the goal for individuals and teams throughout state is to make the trek to the Decatur area Oct. 18 to 19 for the Class A and AA state championship tournaments.

Kerri Carlquist is a returning sectional qualifier with the hopes of making it to state this season. Supporting Carlquist will be a young group.

Sophomores Megan Backman and Ellen Foley could make big improvements this season after impressing in their first year of high school.

“A lot of the freshmen from last year were just great,” coach Barb Tilden said. “They’ve stepped up their games.”

Tilden mentioned trying to make a push in the West Suburban Silver, but admitted the top teams of Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central will be tough to beat.

Three sophomores, Sam Caruso, Grace Ludwig and Gillian Ostrowski, will be hoping to make an early impression. Junior Anna Mahay is also expected to be a regular in the top six.

“Our goals for this year will be to finish .500 or better and in the upper half of the DVC,” coach Scott Miller said.

After winning the York regional at Maple Meadows Golf Course by shooting a 77, De La Cruz grabbed the last individual qualifying spot in the sectional tournament.

She played in youth tournaments over the summer and will be hoping the work put in will result in a top-20 finish at state.
