Girls cross country preview: Falcons have senior foundation

Wheaton Warrenville South is set to reload after a dominating four-year stretch while Wheaton North returns a strong core from a group that advanced to the sectional in 2012.

Wheaton North Falcons

Conference: DuPage Valley

Head coach: Ron Piro

2012 results: 5th in regional, 12th in sectional

Lindsay Johnson, sr.

Bea Nottke, so.

Kate Shikany, sr.

Sarah Santizo, sr.

Outlook: Wheaton North returns five of its top seven runners from a team that advanced to the sectional a year ago, including seniors Kate Shikany and Lindsay Johnson. Also back are seniors Sarah Santizo and Alison Farnsworth along with sophomore Jill Humecke.

Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers

Conference: DuPage Valley

Head coach: Rob Harvey

2012 results: 2nd in regional, 2nd in sectional, 7th in state

Top runners:

Victoria Adamshick, jr.

Mary Erdman, so.

Stephanie Gorski, so.

Kendall Laveen, so.

Katie Popejoy, jr.

Outlook: This is the start of a new era of Tigers’ cross country after the graduation of the team’s top five runners. The Tigers are much younger this fall but do have a group with varsity experience in Stephanie Gorski, Kendall Laveen, Mary Erdman, Victoria Adamshick and Katie Popejoy.

West Chicago Wildcats

Conference: Upstate Eight

Head coach: Bob Maxson

2012 results: 7th in the regional, 11th in sectional

Top runners:

Diana Beltran, sr.

Ana Flores, jr.

Michelle Franch, jr.

Mae Elizabeth Gimre, jr.

Emma McCarthy, so.

Gena Rodriguez, sr.

Lindsey Sayner, sr.

Outlook: Early signs are promising for the Wildcats, who finished first at the Kaneland kickoff meet and fifth at the Crystal Lake invite.

West Chicago has six of its seven runners back who competed in the state series last fall, led by senior Lindsay Sayner, who placed 25th individually at the regional.

St. Francis Spartans

Conference: Suburban Christian

Head coach: Scott Nelson

2012 results: 4th in regional, 5th in sectional

Top runners:

Kate Martin, jr.

Tessa McKenna, sr.

Meghan McShea, sr.

Outlook: The Spartans return four runners that competed at the Wheaton Academy Class 2A sectional last fall. Meghan McShea leads the way while Kate Martin, Tessa McKenna and Katie Vilimek also return with experience.

Wheaton Academy

Warriors

Conference: Suburban Christian

Head coach: Chris Felinski

2012 results: 8th in regional

Annika Pearson, jr.

Outlook: To say that Wheaton Academy is a young team might be a bit of an understatement; five of the Warriors top seven runners this fall are freshmen.

Yet there are promising signs, including a recent second-place showing
