First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn offers specialized memory loss worship service

GLEN ELLYN – First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn offers a unique twist on worship, with a special service for individuals with memory loss.

The "Worship for the Soul" program began in fall 2005 as the idea of staff from Sunrise Senior Living in Glen Ellyn, who reached out to churches in the area to see if any would be interested in hosting services for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of memory loss.

The program allows for worship in a failure-free environment that recognizes individuals may show dementia symptoms such as yelling out, getting up or walking around during a service.

While the first service in November 2005 consisted of 10 people, the program has grown to include about 40 people at its services at 10:30 a.m. every third Wednesday of the month.

Each 30-minute service consists of singing the first verse of four to five familiar hymns and reciting “The Lord’s Prayer” and a Bible verse. Services have varied over the years to include communion, individual prayer and more.

"Worship for the Soul" is open to those with dementia and their caregivers in the community.
