RIVERSIDE – Police in Riverside said they are still searching for the driver of a vehicle wanted in four separate hit-and-run accidents that occurred Friday morning. The driver evaded police and eventually rolled his car several times before coming to a stop in front of the Lyon Post Office and escaping.

Police said they have identified a suspect in the case, but have not yet been able to locate him and he is uncharged at this time.

Riverside police said an officer attempted to stop a bronze 2001 Chevy van on Riverside Road at Lawton Avenue at about 8:41 a.m., according to a news release.

The driver had disobeyed a stop sign while traveling southbound on Longcommon Road at Burlington Street. Police said the vehicle initially pulled over and the driver immediately put both hands out the window to show the officer. Police said the driver was not asked to do this. As the officer approached the van, the driver suddenly sped away.

The officer tried to force the van off the road, making the driver strike a street sign at the corner of Riverside and Olmsted roads. The van's driver then turned south on Miller Road and rear-ended another vehicle.

The suspect then fled westbound on Ogden Avenue and had a third accident in the westbound lanes of Ogden, just west of the Des Plaines River bridge. In a final accident, the suspect drove the van across Ogden Avenue into an opposite lane and struck a vehicle head-on. The driver then rolled the van several times in front of the Lyons Post Office.

The suspect, who was apparently uninjured in the crash, freed himself from the van and fled on foot north into the unincorporated Riverside Lawn area along 39th Street.

Police said that at no time did they attempt to pursue the vehicle. The driver simply fled and police continued to get reports of accidents along his path.

Riverside police, aided by other area police departments, searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him after a two-hour search.
