‘Small Business Saturday’ catching on in Lombard

Published: Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 5:15 p.m. CDT

LOMBARD – Small Business Saturday is beginning to catch on in Lombard, according to the executive director of the Lombard Town Centre.

“We are very pleased,” director Sarah Richardt said, adding that there was a noticeable increase in foot traffic Saturday downtown. “It has been growing every year and now people are catching on.”

With the positive response to Small Business Saturday, Richardt said that next year the town centre will make an additional effort to promote the event.

Yvonne Invergo, executive director of the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said she visited three local businesses early Saturday, but was not sure how the rest of the day went.

Before Thanksgiving, Invergo released a “shopping plans” survey on the chamber’s Facebook page, and of the 86 people who replied, 23 said they planned to shop at local businesses on Small Business Saturday, 20 replied no and 43 replied maybe.

Rochelle Pokorn, owner of Fairytales, Inc., 28 W. St. Charles Road, said that she saw a noticeable increase in customers.

“I think it’s becoming more known and widespread,” Pokorn said.

Pokorn said that it’s hard to tell how sales this weekend will set the store up for the holiday season, but she is hoping for the best.

“I am pretty optimistic that it’s going to be good business,” she said.

Kathleen Roberts, owner of Potted Petals, Inc., 732 S. Main St., said the store had customers all day long.

“It’s very encouraging,” Roberts said. “We have a lot of customers come out to show their support just because it’s Small Business Saturday. It’s a big uptick for us.”
