DARIEN – A Darien resident recently received a call from a man with a "heavy" accent, who claimed to be with Microsoft Windows, according to a news release from the city of Darien.

According to the release, the caller told the resident that they had downloaded a "bad" virus and he needed information to walk them through a fix. He then asked for the computer license number, identification and other personal information.

When the resident asked him what computer he was talking about, he could not answer, according to the release. The resident also asked for a call back number, as the caller I.D. showed "private caller." When the provided number was called, there was no answer.

The city is cautioning residents to never give out any personal information on the phone, especially when the call is not initiated.
