Montini senior guard Kelly Karlis helped the Broncos win a Class 3A state title for the fourth time in five years and first time since the 2011-12 season. Karlis scored team-highs in points in both the semifinal (10 points) and the final (16 points). The Ohio recruit, this week’s the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about winning state again and making up for last year’s third place finish.

What is your favorite part about the experience of going to state?

A couple other teams had a lot of friends on them. I knew some girls from Geneva. Just being down there with some of my best friends is great.

What did it mean to win state after taking third last year?

It’s been our goal all season. It just topped it off. Last year getting third was a disappointment. Not many places is that a disappointment.

When are you getting to campus at Ohio and what are your plans once you get there?

I’m heading down there the last week of June. I’ll be working out and doing some summer school.
