Glenbard East's Scott Borosak heads into third base during Tuesday's game against Addison Trail at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst. After seeing some action last year, Borosak should be a big contributor this spring.

LOMBARD – Glenbard East’s baseball team brings a younger squad to the diamond this season with just one full-time starter returning.

Tyler Behrendt will hit high in the Rams’ order and be one of the team’s top pitchers. Fellow seniors Scott Borosak and Anthony Esterly saw some time last year as well.

Behrendt, Esterly and fellow senior Jimmy MacDonald lead the Rams’ starting rotation. Sophomore Michael Sebby is next in line among the starters and also has started in the outfield during the Rams’ crowded early schedule.

“We got a lot of youth,” coach Joel Pelland said. “We got a few seniors. Our pitching staff is pretty much all seniors. We got a few juniors that are stepping up into some relief roles and maybe will step up into starting roles.”

Pelland is starting to get an idea of who he can rely on within the squad since the Rams already played seven games before they headed downstate Thursday for a spring break trip for three more games this weekend. The Rams were 3-4 after Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to Downers Grove North, a sectional finalist last year. East also has losses to defending Class 4A champ Mount Carmel and 2013 sectional finalist in Lincoln-Way East.

“We’re just inconsistent right now,” Pelland said. “We’ve played some really quality teams, which is another good thing, to see how we compete against quality teams.”

Another sophomore, Ryan Schefske is batting leadoff while playing shortstop. Junior John Allen has been in the middle of the order while also pitching.

The Rams have made some mistakes in early games so far. Pelland is hoping the team be ready when DuPage Valley Conference play starts April 14 at West Aurora.

“It’s just a process,” Pelland said. “As bad as you want to win every game, you really got to take all these nonconference games and just learn from them so that when conference runs around you’re at your best.”
