Letter: Glen Ellyn supports children with fundraiser

To the Editor:

As the saying goes, “it takes a village to raise a child.” One of the wonderful things about Glen Ellyn is that it is supportive of all its children. We at Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center can make that statement as this community has rallied around our largest fundraising event of the year, “Spellapalooza.” On Feb. 28, 17 incredible teams competed in an old fashioned spelling bee. “B.A.M.,” the team sponsored by Just the Bookstore and Marcel’s took home the Champion Speller award, narrowly defeating last year’s champs “Alphabet Soup,” a local gourmet group.

The GECRC raised over $14,000 to support after school programming for Glen Ellyn’s low-income, at-risk student population. We are encouraged that all those who supported this event also believe that literacy is critical to the success of our entire community. Last year alone, we helped over 100 children improve their reading levels and overall academic success.

We are grateful to the spellers, young and old(er), our sponsors and the audience supporting this fun event. Thanks also goes out to the very generous businesses and individuals and PTAs in Glen Ellyn, who contributed wonderful items to our raffle and silent auction and sponsored teams from our wonderful village.

Thank you again, Glen Ellyn, and hope to see you next year!
