Glenbard West, Glenbard South players having breakout seasons on diamond

St. Francis' Janie Smith rounds third and heads home Monday after hitting her second home run of the game Monday against Montini. An underlevel player last season, Smith is making major contributions this spring for the Spartans.

Every spring offers a chance for baseball and softball players to impact their teams more than they ever have before. Here are a few of the players from the area having breakout seasons on the diamond.

Joey Atkinson

School: Glenbard South

Class: Junior

Position: Designated hitter

Impact: Not expected to be a starter this spring, this junior was inserted into the top spot in the batting order a couple of weeks into the season and has responded in a big way for the Raiders. The lefty hitter is batting .386 on the spring with three doubles, a triple, seven RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Ariana Caldarone

School: Wheaton Warrenville South

Class: Junior

Position: Outfield

Impact: A slap-hitter, this junior has been the Tigers' leadoff hitter for most of the spring and has been successful in that role. After 53 at-bats, the right-fielder was batting .321 with two doubles, a triple and seven runs scored.

Ashley Cohen

School: Glenbard South

Class: Sophomore

Position: Pitcher/shortstop

Impact: This sophomore has been a major contributor for the Raiders in all facets of the game. Splitting pitching duties with Taylor Carli, Cohen is 7-2 on the spring with a 1.69 ERA in 49 2/3 innings of work. On the offensive side, the shortstop is batting .424 with 14 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Zach Colangelo

School: Wheaton North

Class: Sophomore

Position: Pitcher

Impact: Called up to the varsity a week before the first game, this sophomore right-hander has become an important part of the Falcons' pitching staff. In his last three conference starts, Colangelo has notched wins over West Aurora, Glenbard East and Lake Park and has allowed just one earned run in 20 innings.

Ben Flores

School: Wheaton Warrenville South

Class: Junior

Position: Left fielder

Impact: A newcomer to the varsity in 2014, this junior has been a catalyst for the Tigers in the leadoff spot in the batting order. A lefty hitter, Flores sports a .357 average on the season with three doubles and has also contributed 13 runs scored and three RBIs.

Kayla Goffinet

School: West Chicago

Class: Junior

Position: Outfield/second base

Impact: In her first year on the varsity, this junior has contributed in both center field and at second base. Goffinet's defense has been stellar and she has batted in the top four of the lineup throughout the spring, and Wildcats' head coach Kim Wallner praised Goffinet's improvement and positive attitude throughout the season.

Kat Meyer

School: Wheaton North

Class: Senior

Position: Third base

Impact: Stepping into a leadership role this spring, this varsity veteran has seen her game reach a new level. The senior has cranked out five doubles and three home runs as part of her .317 batting average and has also added 12 RBIs and eight runs while providing solid defense at third base.

Caylin Potter

School: Glenbard West

Class: Junior

Position: Pitcher

Impact: This junior has stepped in nicely as the No. 2 pitcher behind varsity veteran Taylor Langtry. She had thrown 60 1/3 innings as of Monday, winning a pair of games while striking out 28. Potter has also contributed at the plate with eight hits, four walks, three RBIs and five runs.

Janie Smith

School: St. Francis

Class: Junior

Position: Shortstop

Impact: Mainly on the frosh/soph team a year ago, this junior has stepped into a starting role at shortstop with the graduation of standout Alyssa Fernandez and has excelled for the Spartans. Batting in the No. 2 spot in the order, Smith was hitting .410 with eight extra base hits and 22 runs scored as of Saturday and was leading the team in sacrifices.

Drew Vogg

School: Glenbard West

Class: Senior

Position: Third baseman

Impact: This senior has stepped into a full-time role this spring and has been one of the most consistent hitters for the Hilltoppers. Batting .324 with a .412 on-base percentage, Vogg has eight doubles, two triples and one home run to go along with 19 RBIs and 14 runs. He has also walked eight times while fanning on just six occasions.
