Silver Cross Hospital implements 'The Golden Hour' program for parents and newborns

Published: Monday, June 9, 2014 10:41 p.m. CDT

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital’s Women and Infant Services Unit is now offering “The Golden Hour” program, an industry standard best practice, to all newborns and their parents.

This program allows parents and newborns to spend uninterrupted time together in the first hour after birth so babies, who are very alert during this time, can adjust to life outside the womb.

“Skin to skin holding” helps stabilize the baby’s temperature, breathing, heart rate and blood sugar. It strengthens bonding between mother and baby, creates less stress and crying, enhances brain development, stimulates a more successful breastfeeding experience, creates a calming effect during procedures and reduces bleeding in mother after delivery.
