In Focus: Mental toughness

Published: Thursday, May 15, 2014 10:12 p.m. CDT

While covering the Kane County Boys Track and Field Meet last week in Streamwood, I had the opportunity for a college student to shadow me for the afternoon. Amanda Pomplin, a St. Charles resident and student at the College of DuPage, joined me on the field.

She asked me what my favorite things to photograph were and answering was pretty easy – sports. Mainly because sports encompass everything that I love about photojournalism. Action, passion, emotion and real moments are a part of every sport. The athletes don’t know that I’m there, or don’t really notice me anyway. This allows them to be themselves and not have a lot of camera awareness.

This became evident as Batavia’s Patrick Redmond (pictured second from right) exited the track, in agony, with the aid of fellow teammates after competing in the 3200-meter run.
