District 156 registration fees raised to allow free student entry to games

McHENRY – District 156 students will be able to attend football games, volleyball matches and other athletic events for free next school year.

To cover the cost of the change, the District 156 school board voted to raise registration fees $10 across the board to $260 per student, Superintendent Mike Roberts said, adding that if a student attends three events, it will just about cover the increase.

"Our kids attend our events as well as anybody in the conference, but we'd like more," he said. "We'd like to encourage those that haven't been attending to give it a try, and we want to help out the kids that come to all of our events."

The cost for non-district students will remain at $3 a person. Adults will still have to pay $4 to attend the games.

The free entry for district students will affect volleyball matches, football games, girls and boys basketball games, and wrestling matches.

The general student and technology fee has not been raised since 2011 when it was upped $25, the athletic fee was also raised and a new activity fee was added for students looking to participate in clubs. The marching band previously was the only non-athletic activity to have the fee.

The school board also approved in the same 5-0 vote – two board members were absent – increasing the lunch price to $2.55 from $2.50 to cover rising costs, some of which is tied to stricter federal nutrition standards.

The athletic and activity fees will not change from last year, Roberts said.
