The spring sports season has concluded and with it the school year. Now is the perfect time to take one more look at the best moments from the spring sports season for Downers Grove North.
1. More softball success
Despite bringing in a new coach and having to replace a few key players lost to graduation, Downers Grove North's softball team kept right on going this spring.
Dale Ryndak, who went on to be named Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year, returned from injury, replaced Elaine Heflin in the pitching circle and helped lead the Trojans to their fifth consecutive West Suburban Silver title. Seniors Brittany Claver, Ali Woitovich, Kelsey Gockman and Anne Lusher provided some of the offensive pop.
2. Top times for track teams
Two quartets of DGN runners kept impressive streaks alive on back-to-back weekends.
On May 24, the Trojans' 4x800-meter relay team comprised of Emma Moravec, Margaret Schaub, Zayna Jan and Stephanie Urbancik secured the fifth straight all-state finish for the relay. Their fourth-place finish (9:14.16) was the best showing since the 2011 quartet won state. Urbancik was part of that unit.
Not to be outdone, the quartet of Tony Zea, Jack Diamond, Zac Christensen and Ryan Clevenger brought home the fourth all-state finish for North's boys 4x800 since 2009 as it finished eighth (7:47.95) at the state meet on May 31.
Zea (fourth in the 800), Clevenger (third in the 1,600) and Zack Smith (sixth in the 3,200; ninth in the 1,600) earned additional all-state finishes for North's boys.
Urbancik added a second state medal in the 800 run.
3. Soccer sets new standard
Look behind the numbers, and the 13-7-3 record posted by North's girls soccer team was extremely impressive.
Included in the win total was three victories and a title at the West Chicago Invitational and a pair of wins in the prestigious PepsiCo Showdown tournament, plus West Suburban Silver victories against Glenbard West and Proviso West.
The squad, led by a slew of seniors including Gianna Marconi, Mary Rounce and Mary Doro, tied against Hinsdale South in the season finale and took eventual WSS champ Lyons Township to double overtime before losing on penalty kicks.
4. Gymnastics state meet statements
A few individuals dominated at the boys state gymnastics meet, but Downers Grove North athletes broke through to grab a share of the spotlight.
Thomas Brethauer had a stellar showing on still rings, scoring a 9.10 to finish in a tie for second place. Teammate Strah Sopcic was ninth on rings with a mark of 8.40.
Jeremy Guinn had a strong showing on pommel horse, where his score of 7.20 was good for 13th overall.
