Thumbs up to Downers Grove native and Conservation Police Officer Steve Vasicek, who was recently named the Mississippi Flyway Council Waterfowl Officer of the Year and was given the Award of Valor by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Patrolling the woods near Carbondale, Vasicek has the full powers of a traditional police officer to arrest, detain and investigate, plus the added responsibilities to enforce the hunting rules. He was presented with the awards at a June 20 awards ceremony in Springfield.

Thumbs up to the After Hours Film Society for recently celebrating its 25th anniversary. The not-for-profit group formed in 1989 to encourage the appreciation of cinema, both as an art and as a medium of information and education. Operating out of the Tivoli Theatre, the film society's mission is to provide the suburban community with first class foreign, art and independent films that otherwise would not be offered locally. Congratulations on the milestone and here's to another successful 25 years.
