Police Officer Joseph Mahanna is sworn in at the Riverside Board of Trustees meeting Thursday by Village Clerk Cathy Haley.

RIVERSIDE – Police Officer Joseph Mahanna was sworn in at the village Board of Trustees meeting Thursday at Village Hall.

Mahanna is a graduate of Indiana University and worked for the Indiana University Police Department before coming to Riverside. He currently lives in Chicago.

Mahanna's swearing in was delayed by a training accident during a village physical fitness session when he tore a pectoral muscle. Despite doctors saying it would take six months for him to return the department, he returned to the department after only four months, Police Chief Tom Weitzel said.

During his rehabilitation, Mahanna continued to meeting with officers at the department to develop a relationship with his future co-workers, Weitzel said.

"He is an outstanding officer," Weitzel said. "He has really excelled."

Mahanna thanked his family for their support at the meeting as part of his comments to the board.

"Thank you for giving me this opportunity," Mahanna said. "This is a top notch police department. I'm excited to do another 30 years here."
