Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the American military. In 2013, Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 27.

Every Memorial Day, families and communities across the nation take time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Americans observe this special holiday in many different ways; such as displaying flags, visiting veterans' gravesites, marching in parades or reading President Lincoln's Gettysburg address and other historic and patriotic speeches by presidents and military leaders. And of course, the traditional selling of poppies by veterans' organizations to raise funds for veterans' causes.

In York Township, we fly our flag at half-staff until noon and in accordance with a Congressional resolution passed in 2000, we pause at 3 p.m. local time for a moment of silence to remember and honor the fallen. Another way we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice is to honor our living military veterans every day of the year.

Veterans include York Township Senior Center members John M. Stancy, John "Jack" Towers, Estelle Worthem, Edward L. Topol, Floyd Skawski, Louis E. Celli, Earl Shabosky, Dominic Coco, Arthur Hrabec, Howard Hill, Louis Licastro Jr. and Norbert Miloch, all of whom have been honored in our "Remember When" display at Township Hall.

And to all you veterans: York Township would like to share your pictures and stories about your service to this great country of ours. Please feel free to submit your photos and a story. Your photos will be returned. Not only will they be published in our Senior Sun newsletter, they also will be posted in the glass display case on the lobby wall in Township Hall.

We are proud of our men and women who served to make this country as great as it is. We would definitely like photos of you in your uniform, and if possible a photo of you today so that people can see what you look like then and now. Just send your photos and your story to: Remember When, c/o York Township, 1502 South Meyers Road, Lombard, Illinois 60148.
