MAYWOOD – The identity of a child found in the Des Plaines River earlier this week near Riverside has not yet been determined.

Mary Paleologos, public information officer for the Cook County Bureau of Administration, said the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office took a DNA sample from the body and gave it to investigators with the Maywood Police Department. An autopsy was performed on the body, but the manner of death is pending, Paleologos said.

The baby was found Tuesday near 31st Street and First Avenue by members of the Cook Country Sheriff's Police Department. They conducted a search for the body, which media reports indicate was discovered by a local kayaker who has been volunteering in the search effort.

The body recovered was that of a young, male child. It is believed to be 1-year-old Bryeon Hunter, who went missing last month from his home in Maywood.

Hunter was initially reported as abducted when he went missing. But the child's mother, Lakesha Baker, and her boyfriend, Michael Scott, were later charged with first-degree murder in his death.

"We assume it's the boy based on the size and description," said Maywood Police Chief Tim Curry. "But the analysis hasn't come back yet."

The Maywood Police Department sent the DNA sample to the Illinois State Police's Forensic Sciences Command in Chicago, Curry said. It's not known how long it will take the crime lab to analyze the DNA and provide an identity, he said.
