CHARLESTON - A pair of relay finalists accounted for the best showings for Downers Grove North’s and Downers South’s girls track teams at last weekend’s Class 3A state meet.

The Trojans didn’t have to wait long Saturday to run their state finals race at Eastern Illinois University. In the meet-opening 4x800-meter relay, the quartet of Gabrielle Hesslau, Zayna Jan, Grace Maletich and Stephanie Urbancik clocked a 9:21.74 to finish sixth. That showing accounted for all of North’s four team points as it finished tied for 50th in the team standings.

The Mustangs had their own all-state finish in the 4x200 relay race in which Sam Baeten, Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker, Michaela Hackbarth and Jada Franklin finished eighth with a time of 1:45.11. That finish accounted for both of South’s team points as it finished tied for 59th overall.

Junior Haley Albers (12th, 10:55.08) and sophomore Abby Kargol (17th, 11:06.71) both had top-20 finishes in a 3,200 field that had 44 competitors.
