DOWNERS GROVE - Downers Grove North’s boys track and field team Friday flexed its muscle in the distance events, tallied 54 points and finished fifth at its own Class 3A sectional meet.

The Trojans saw three athletes qualify for the state meet in three events. Preliminary races and field event flights at the state meet begin Friday at Eastern Illinois University.

In a tight two-way race, North’s Ben Eaton won the 3,200-meter run in 9:23.17, edging Hinsdale Central’s Billy Magnesen by more than two seconds.

Zach Smith was second in the 1,600 run with a time 4:18.89 to earn his state berth. Teammate Ryan Clevenger narrowly missed a state trip in the same race with his fifth-place time of 4:24.12.

Nick Janicki earned North’s third state berth in the discus, where his mark of 155 feet, 4 inches was good for third place.

The Trojans had narrow misses with Tony Zea in the 800 run (1:57.89), and with the 4x200 relay (third, 1:32.58) and the 4x100 relay (fourth, 44.02).
