BARTLETT – Parents of a Bartlett 2-year-old who recently died after falling into a swimming pool are currently being investigated for neglect by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, DCFS spokesperson Dave Clarkin said.

Bartlett police and fire responded to the incident at 1:40 p.m. June 14 at the home of toddler Edgar Fernandez in the 200 block of E. County Drive, Bartlett police said.

Edgar was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and died June 19 of an accidental drowning, according to the Office of the Cook County Medical Examiner.

DCFS has not received any prior reports of abuse against the parents, said Clarkin. Edgar's sibling is currently in the care of other family members.

Clarkin said that inadequate supervision is the third leading cause of child death in Illinois and that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional deaths of toddlers and preschoolers in the United States.
