Lights installed on Great Western Trail bridges in Lombard

Published: Thursday, June 27, 2013 5:55 p.m. CDT

LOMBARD – The three new bridges along the Great Western Trail in Lombard are one step closer to completion after lights were installed recently.

People can now bike, walk or run on the Great Western Trail and the bridges that span St. Charles Road, Grace Street and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks thanks to the new lights.

The lights will remain on for seven consecutive days as a test to ensure they are functioning properly, according to a statement from the village's Public Works Department. Once the lights pass this test, they will be operated only during times of diminished visibility.

The Great Western Trail Bridge project began almost two years ago and its purpose was to create three bridges that carried trail users over St. Charles Road, Grace Street and the Union Pacific Railroad and eliminated the need for them to cross all three.

The grand opening of the bridges is scheduled for later this year.
