NAPERVILLE – The upcoming Walk to End Lupus Now will have a celebrity twist.

Shannon Boxx, a midfielder for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League, a veteran of the U.S. Women’s National Team and three-time Olympic gold-medalist, will lead the walk along Naperville's downtown Riverwalk Aug. 10.

Boxx revealed in 2012 that she was living with lupus and has become a spokesperson to raise awareness for the disease. The walk is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and features 1- and 3-mile routes.

Additionally, the Red Stars, who play their home games at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex,  have partnered with the Lupus Foundation of America, Illinois Chapter to raise awareness for the event. Members of the foundation and lupus supporters are scheduled to attend the Red Stars match this Saturday, August 3, when Chicago takes on Seattle Reign FC at 6 p.m. All Red Stars players and select team staff will wear lupus awareness t-shirts during team warm-ups that day to further bring awareness to the cause.

Funds raised at the Walk to End Lupus Now event will benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, Illinois Chapter’s mission to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, support individuals and families affected by the disease, increase awareness of lupus among health professionals and the public.
