Downers Grove woman wins Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital art contest

DOWNERS GROVE – When she set out to put together a piece of art for Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital’s Pink Ribbon Art Contest, Margret Rossi wanted people facing cancer to know they were not alone, the hospital said.

"In my art, I’m trying to represent the strong support and love for people who are going through their battle with cancer,” Rossi said in a press release from the hospital.

What she made was a piece titled “Love,” and her work won first place in the Adult Category in this year’s art contest. Rossi’s photo features a pink ribbon attached to a black background, the ribbon spelling out the word “love” in cursive.

Rossi is a Downers Grove resident and graphic designer.

Her mother, Dorothy Sipp, encouraged Rossi to enter the piece in this year’s contest. Sipp works at the hospital through Adventist Health Care at Home, and she believes her daughter’s work represents the love the hospital’s staff has for its patients.

Rossi was one of four contest winners announced Oct. 1 at the hospital’s Pink Tree Lighting ceremony. While she won the adult category, other winners were announced in different age categories.

Alora Lites of Brookfield won in the 8-years-old-and-under category, while her sister Ashley Lites won the 12-16-years-old category. Deanna Anatra of Downers Grove was runner-up in the adult category.

A past winner of the Pink Ribbon Art Contest, Anatra’s piece this year was a pencil drawing titled “Hope,” featuring a woman with a tattooed flower on one of her breasts.

While the woman’s face remains white, and her skin a pale yellow, the flower on her breast is highlighted in bold colors, the hospital said. It represents a tattoo of hope, Anatra said.

Adventist Midwest Health includes Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital.
