WARRENVILLE – A Warrenville man has pleaded guilty to an aggravated DUI involving death charge in relation to a fatal crash that occurred in April, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

Karlos Leath, 32, of the 29W500 block of Country Ridge Drive, was driving southbound on Schaffner Road in Winfield when he lost control of his vehicle about 10:32 p.m. April 25 near Mack Road, leading it to swerve off the road and crash into trees on the north side of the street, according to the release.

The passenger in the vehicle, Wheaton Warrenville South High School student Stephanie Pickett, was transported to a local hospital and later died from massive head injuries sustained in the crash, the release said. Leath also was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries before being taken into custody and charged.

He has remained in the DuPage County Jail on a $1 million bail since his arrest, the release said. Investigators found Leath’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit of 0.08 at the time of the crash.

In exchange for Leath’s guilty plea, the state has agreed to cap its sentencing recommendation at eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to the release.

Leath is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 12 by Judge Blanche Hill-Fawell, the release said.
