Elmhurst police railroad sign to be made into billboard

ELMHURST – A railroad safety message developed by the Elmhurst Police Department will be on billboards throughout northeastern Illinois for the next month.

The signs posted in downtown Elmhurst that read "Don't Start Dashing, Till the Lights Stop Flashing" were developed in 2011. In celebration of the Elmhurst Railroad Safety Program's 19th year, the signs have been redeveloped into a roadside billboard by Clear Channel Holdings.

The billboards will be throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

Clear Channel received the 2012 Silver Bell Award for their willingness to post pro-bono public service safety information on their electronic roadside billboards.

The Elmhurst Police Department, Illinois Operation Lifesaver and Clear Channel are working in conjunction to remind citizens the only safe way to cross railroad tracks is at designated crossings and only after the crossing gates, flashers and bells have completely turned off.
