Cancer, AIDs donation scam reported in Cicero

Published: Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 3:30 a.m. CDT

CICERO – If someone appeals to your sense of charity and asks for a donation for the "Saint Mary and Elizabeth Medical AIDS and Cancer Fund," walk away.

A man was soliciting donations in the 5300 block of West Cermak Road in Cicero on Nov. 9 for the "AIDS and Cancer Fund," with the promise of a $20 gift card from Walmart to donors.

One donor contacted police after he made a donation and called a phone number provided by the solicitor to claim his $20 gift card. He dialed the number and connected with a Walmart store, but was told he was one of many callers seeking a gift card. Unfortunately, Walmart was not involved in any such promotion.

Police said the donor knows the solicitor.
