With the upcoming New Year comes a great sense of starting over again. Can you feel it? It’s like the school kid who gets excited at the beginning of a new school year with that box of fresh crayons and a blank notebook.

How does that translate to your business life?

With some extra time off during the holidays, you look over your new calendar – or new tablet – and want to start the year off right. Have you noticed yourself saying “I’m going to do it differently this year?” There is a compulsion to do the right things, meet new goals and have a year like none other.

This time of year you notice a lot of talk about resolutions. Have you had any luck with that? Do we plan too big sometimes? Bigger than we can handle?

Organizations, such as chambers of commerce, often start the year with programs that lend themselves to helping those hungry for a fresh start. Both time management and personal organization experts make great presentations, especially pertinent to January attendees.

Busy business networkers may want to give one or more of these some efforts:

• Take advantage of the memberships you currently have and maximize them. Attend different types of events, even putting them as recurring events in your Outlook (or other calendar program or app).

• Make a promise to try one new avenue of networking, whether that be in the real world or the virtual.

• Look over your organizational skills and see where you can improve to be more efficient. You can Google the topic for helpful tips.

• Help a fellow business professional with their business. Buddy up on some cold calls or coffee meetings.

Success in any of these can be confidence-building and help your momentum going forward.

Whether your resolution for the New Year is to be early to a meeting or to unsubscribe to an unwanted email, make some forward motion in the first months of 2014 if you truly want a fresh start. “The starting point of all achievement is desire,” says Napoleon Hill.

Do you desire a new start?

Happy New Year!
