BLOOMINGDALE – St. Isidore School in Bloomingdale is taking the phrase “safety first” to the next level.

The school’s students, parents and staff are in the process of compiling their submission for the Catholic Mutual Safety Contest, administrators said. The first place winner will receive a $10,000 grant.

Hundreds packed St. Isidore’s gym Jan. 24 to participate in the filming of this year’s entry – a rap music video.

“The kids are really enjoying it,” said Principal Cyndi Collins.

The contest, facilitated by Catholic Mutual Insurance Group’s Risk Management Division, encourages students to address school safety through a presentation, according to administrators.

Last year, a group of St. Isidore seventh-and-eighth grade students came in third place and won $500 for their PowerPoint presentation on parking lot safety, administrators said.

Now, the school is using rap and dance to address CPR, bullying and Catholic virtues, among other topics, and students, teachers and parents are all getting involved.

“We wanted this to be a community event,” said St. Isidore counselor and project coordinator Trevor Simpson.

More than 400 people are participating in the video’s production. Administrators emphasized the contest’s function as a community building initiative.

“It’ll be something that everybody’s proud off,” Collins said.

The rap lyrics were compiled from student submissions with the help of a school parent, according to administrators. A St. Isidore family with a recording studio in their basement assisted with mixing and editing.

The video’s primary director also was a parent, and a parent developed the concept and costume for St. Isidore mascot Spinner the Cyclone, who is featured prominently in the submission.

A school alumnus is filming and editing the entry and local police and firefighters make cameos in the video.

“It’s been pretty cool,” Simpson, said.

The undertaking, which has been filmed in pieces during recent weeks, is funded by the Home School Association, which is similar to a PTA.

St. Isidore will compete against more than 100 schools in its category and will learn if it won later this summer, administrators said.
