LA GRANGE – It’s been a tough winter season for area public works departments.

According to the La Grange Public Works Department, the village has already used approximately 1,900 tons of salt this winter, as of Jan. 29. Over the last five years, the village has used an average 1,927 tons of salt for the whole season.

Currently, the village has 700 tons of salt remaining in storage, but more may be hard to come by.

According to an announcement posted on the village’s website, while salt is normally available to the village from area vendors, the demand for salt has significantly spiked across the Midwest leading to limited supplies and higher prices.

To date, the La Grange Public Works Department has responded to 34 winter events with plowing and salting this season. This year’s snowfall of 50 inches in La Grange is more than double the average for the area.

Since many weeks of winter are still left, public works crews will be modifying salting operations to conserve the village’s remaining inventory.

The village will focus salting on arterial and collector streets, and will only salt intersections on residential side streets, the village said. The village’s salt supplies will also be mixed with sand to improve traction, and crews will only apply deicing chemicals to main roadways.

Due to the decreased salt use, the village is reminding residents that streets – especially side streets – may be slick. The public is urged to take extra time when driving in the village.
