On a team loaded with sophomores and juniors who were key contributors, Devin Blake managed to stand out for Downers Grove North’s boys basketball team this season. In his first year with the varsity team, the 6-foot-4 forward was able to adjust to the speed and the intensity of the game and emerged as the Trojans’ leading scorer this winter. Blake, the Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his first varsity season, adjusting to his role on the team and how playing this season will help him next year and beyond.

What was this season like for you?

It was definitely an experience. It was very hard in the beginning. There was a lot of pressure and the competition was a lot better, but overall, as the season progressed, I adjusted to it.

What was the biggest thing you learned by playing with the varsity team this year?

Just what my role is, what I can do and how I could help the team best. I think I became a smarter player. I took better shots and I learned how to create better shots. It didn’t come right away. At first it was tough, but toward the middle and end of the season I started to figure it out.

How will playing on varsity this season help you next year?

I feel like having this experience makes me a better all-around player. I know what it takes to win and what it takes to get shots and how to play at both ends of the floor.

Where did you improve most this season?

I think my basketball IQ is the biggest improvement I had throughout the season.
