Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, is likely guaranteed a second term in the Illinois General Assembly after winning her primary race against challenger Antonio "Tony" Favela, according to preliminary county election results.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting in both Cook and DuPage counties, Willis will run as the Democratic candidate in November's election, facing no Republican challenger.

In DuPage County, Willis beat out Favela, about 85.5 percent to 14.5 percent, according to initial results. In Cook County, she won 75.6 percent to 24.4 percent, preliminary results stated.

"I'm very happy with the results and very humbled by them," Willis said.

During her first term in the Illinois House, Willis said she has striven to have an open line of communication with her constituents, and that's something she hopes to continue in her expected second term.

"I have worked hard to be part of their community," she said.

However, Favela questioned some of Willis' high-level supporters and the attack ads he witnessed during the campaign.

"The machine won," he said.

At the end of the day, Favela and his campaign worked hard and did what they could in the race, he said.

"I don't have to be an elected official to do good in my community," Favela said.

Some key issues that have come up during Willis' first term in office include creating better property tax relief opportunities and safer communities for residents, Willis said.

She expects to continue to tackle those topics and any other issues voters bring to her, she said.

On Tuesday night, Willis said she would be getting back to business as usual quickly, with plans to head down to Springfield on Wednesday to continue to do her job for residents.

"I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support from the voters of the 77th District," she said.
