Published: Tuesday, March 25, 2014 12:44 p.m. CDT

GURNEE – Warren-Newport Public Library will host a discussion about retirement plans 7 p.m. Monday. The class examines how retirement takes planning. The class, "Is It the Right Time To Retire," will help attendees put financial plans together in order to aid retirement.Financial educator Karen Chan, who has worked at University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, will lead the discussion."We take a fictional couple and create a cash flow projection and show how they can have a happy and affordable lifestyle based on their income and expenses," Chan said. "It looks at social security, employee benefits, professional skills, income [and] assets."The class is based on a personal experience Chan encountered two years ago that made her think about retirement and how citizens are not properly informed about it, she said."I think that people know the pieces, and what they get from the program is pulling them together to see the future," she said. "It is looking at the information, analyzing it and making a decision."Gail Schrader, adult programming specialist at WNPL, said patrons of the library have expressed interest in retirement planning information.Chan said, "Retirement affects all parts of your life and allows you to account for the little things as well as the big things."
