Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Published: Monday, April 7, 2014 11:40 a.m. CDT

In concert with numerous other national authorities, Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), Vice Adm. Bill French, proclaimed April 2014 Sexual Assault Awareness Month for all Navy Installations across the Navy beginning April 1.

The proclamation supports the Department of Defense theme for this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is “Live Our Values: Step Up to Stop Sexual Assault.”

“Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) personnel at Installations across the Navy Enterprise have been planning and gearing up for SAAM,” said Tammy O’Rourke, CNIC’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Program manager. “There are well over 800 events taking place during the month of April across the Navy Enterprise, so there are numerous ways to get involved.”

Some of these events include SAPR 5k runs/walks, sports tournaments, art exhibits, poster contests, teal ribbon campaigns, and much more.

“Important strides have been taken in prevention, response, accountability and victim care but there is more to do to end the crime of sexual assault, said O’Rourke. “Awareness and training efforts are showing progress through an increase of reports of sexual assault.”

In Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13) there was a 46 percent increase from FY12 in the reporting of sexual assault. O’Rourke said that the reporting increase may indicate more people are coming forward than in the past but noted the work is not done yet.

“The entire Navy community has a part in prevention of and responding to sexual assault,” she said. “Sailors, civilians and their families must intervene to reduce risk, stop inappropriate behavior, and report crimes. Bystander Intervention is vital in helping to stop unsafe behavior.”
