BROOKFIELD – A Brookfield resident who was asleep on a couch in his living room had a rude awakening April 16 at about 2:30 a.m. when he discovered a man attempting to get into his home.

The homeowner, who lives in the 3700 block of Forest Avenue, told police he heard a loud bang and saw a bright flashing light, according to police reports. He went to the front door and found a man standing between the front door of the vestibule, which was forced open.

The homeowner shouted at the man to get out and tried to grab him, but the man ran off.

Police found a man nearby who matched the offender description and later identified him as Ryan Wood, 35, of the 3600 block of Prairie Avenue. According to police, Wood was identified by the homeowner as the man who attempted to break into his home.

Wood told police that he was not able to recall the being at the home, but could recall other events of the night, according to police. Police reported that Wood appeared highly intoxicated.

Police charged Wood with criminal trespass to residence and criminal damage to property.
