Prep roundup: Hinsdale South baseball sees streak snapped

Hinsdale South’s baseball team won the first two games of its three-game West Suburban Gold series against Proviso East in dominant fashion, but the Hornets were tripped up by Morton in a 3-2 defeat Tuesday.

That game was the the finale of a WSG series that was pushed back because of weather. The loss snapped South’ five-game winning streak.

The Hornets also lost 2-0 against Hinsdale Central on Thursday despite a five-hit, complete-game pitching performance from Anthony Nicholas.

Jon Uba pitched all five innings of a 13-1 victory against Proviso East in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. South won the second game 15-1. Both games lasted five innings.

Eric Benson was the winning pitcher in a 12-4 win against Proviso West on April 17.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils made quick work of Proviso West on Tuesday, winning the West Suburban Silver contes,t 7-0.

Katie Murphy and Alison Cerny scored two goals each, and Maeve McLaughlin, Reagan Wright and Liz Keller each scored once as Central improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in WSS play.

Riley Glenn and Katy Coseglia each played a half in goal to share the shutout.

Central won 1-0 against Wheaton North on Thursday.

Hinsdale South

The Hornets finished off their run at the PepsiCo Showdown tournament with a 1-0 loss against Oswego. The squad went 2-2 in the tourney, notching wins against Deerfield and Wheaton North.

SOFTBALL

Hinsdale Central

Alysa Doneske hit a three-run home run in the top of the second inning during Monday’s game against Reavis, but the Rams scored in the bottom of the second and again in their half of the third as they led 5-3 when the game was called off because of rain midway through the fifth.

Emma Day and Riley Burr also scored on Doneske’s blast.

Hinsdale South

Mackenzie Kern had three hits, three RBIs and a run scored in an April 17 game against Oak Park-River Forest.

Holli Jones and Sarah Hanson each drove in a run. Morgan Majcen scored three runs and Jones, Kern, Abby Overmann and Rachel Soukop scored one run apiece.

BADMINTON

Hinsdale South

Competing at New Trier’s Featherfest tournament on Saturday, the Hornets came home with the title.

South scored 33 points to finish ahead of Lyons Township and Fremd, which both scored 29 points.

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils captured the title at their own invite on Saturday.

Central scored 60 points to finish ahead of Glenbard East (47) and Neuqua Valley (46).

On Tuesday, Central defeated Oak Park-River Forest 14-1.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils continued their recent hot play with a 25-23, 24-26, 25-22 win against York on Tuesday.

Central was coming off a 5-0 showing and title at Saturday’s Schaumburg tournament, where it defeated St. Charles East, North Chicago, Palatine, Downers Grove North and Schaumburg.

BOYS TENNIS

Hinsdale Central

Facing West Suburban Silver conference foe Oak Park-River Forest on Tuesday, the Red Devils cruised to a 7-0 win.

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils earned a team score of 137.275 at the Dave Donaldson invite on Saturday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils hung tough with a solid Libertyville team, but lost, 8-7, on Monday.

BADMINTON: Both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South will compete at South's ABCD invite at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

SOFTBALL: District bragging rights will be on the line when Hindale South welcomes Hinsdale Central at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER: It's a nonconference game, but Hinsdale South will get a good test when it plays at York at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
