Sailors at Naval Station Great Lakes enjoyed some friendly competition during a barbecue grill-off and poster designing contest, April 23.

The annual event is sponsored by the base’s Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) and promotes Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which aims to build an aware and informed Navy that is intolerant of sexual assault.

“We don’t talk about this issue only during the month of April,” said Capt. Henry “Hank” Roux, Commanding Officer of Training Support Center (TSC). “This is a continuous battle. Shipmates have to look out for shipmates.”

Funds were provided by Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department Naval Station Great Lakes to cover the cost of food for the 17 barracks in the competition. Sailors were allowed to express their creativity and design their own menus along with a poster that represented this year’s theme, “Live Our Values: Step Up to Stop Sexual Assault.”

“This is a great way to raise awareness,” said FC1 Tonya Greene. “This type of event shows how many people are actually involved and recognizes advocates that can help others.”

Adding to the atmosphere were inflatable basketball and jousting games, great music, and unlimited soda, water, and chips for all to enjoy.

“We have been planning this grill out for two months,” said FCSN Dakota Brown, the CSADD public affairs officer. “It’s been great to see everyone get so passionately involved to make this such a success.”
