Prep roundup: Downers Grove North baseball wins series against York

Facing York in a West Suburban Silver doubleheader Saturday, Downers Grove North’s baseball team split a pair of close games.

Pitcher Brett Pyburn struck out seven and yielded just one earned run in a 2-1 North victory in the first game. Joe Provenzano and Ray Greco scored the runs.

Matt Bohanon was sharp on the mound in Game 2 but an unearned run led to a 1-0 win for the Dukes.

The Trojans broke out the bats for an 8-1 win against the Dukes on Wednesday. Myles Farley drove in three runs, Ray Greco, Joe Provenzano, Pat Geraghty Paul Cappetta and Matt Bohanon drove in one run each, and Emil Baftirovski tripled as part of a three-hit day. Ryan Andrews allowed just six hits and an earned run on the mound.

Farley earned the pitching win in a 7-4 win against Addison Trail on April 24. He struck out five in four innings and allowed three earned runs. Offensively, Emil Baftirovski was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and Paul Cappetta went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

BASEBALL

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs remained the front runners in the West Suburban Gold with a weekend doubleheader sweep against Leyden.

South won the opener 9-2 and took the nightcap 7-1.

Rashaun Cowan, Matt Zinnecker and Zack Radde all plated two runs in the first game and Danny Spinuzza pitched a complete game for the win.

In the second game, Anthony Metz drove in three runs to help lift Chris Pedrak to the pitching win.

Playing Lyons Township on Thursday, the Mustangs lost 11-6. Pedrak hit a solo home run, Danny Oriente drove in two runs and Joey Engel and Kyle May also had one RBI each.

SOFTBALL

Downers Grove North

The Trojans squared off against Class 3A defending state champion Glenbard South on Saturday and won 9-0. Dale Ryndak earned the pitching win.

North suffered a 7-5 West Suburban Silver loss against Oak Park-River Forest on April 23. The Trojans’ game against Glenbard West on Monday was rained out.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs picked up back-to-back West Suburban Gold conference wins late last week.

After defeating Proviso East on Thursday, South made short work of Hinsdale South in a game it won 27-0 on Friday. Melissa Orton and Caitlyn Daly each hit two home runs and drove in five runs. Jess Andree hit a homer and also had five RBIs. Nicole Bowman homered and drove in four runs and Dana Kremer also went deep.

Westmont

The Sentinels broke out the bats and scored a season-high runs in a 21-7 victory against St. Joseph on Thursday.

The day before that, Westmont cruised past Christian Liberty Academy 13-0.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Downers Grove North

Prior to playing at the Downers Grove South invite over the weekend, the Trojans defeated Lyons Township 32-30, 25-18 in a West Suburban Silver match April 22. Jonathan Poortinga had 12 kills and four blocks, Tom Sarver tallied eight kills, and Michal Mierzwa added 5 kills and three blocks. Dan Gilbert dished 22 assists.

The following day, a solid St. Francis team topped North 29-27, 25-18.

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs scored a 138.30 and placed second at Glenbard West’s Steve Kafka invite on Saturday. South posted the high score on both high bar and parallel bars.

Dominic Tommasone won the all-around, Evan Baird took fourth (43.60) and Brock Herion was fifth (42.60).

1 Place finish for Downers Grove North's girls 4 x 400-meter relay at the Palatine invite on Saturday. The Trojans clocked a 4:11.40

74 Points scored by Westmont's boys track team in a triangular meet win against Walther Christian and Hope Academy. Nick Dea won both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

52.10 Winning all-around score for Downers Grove South's Dominic Tommasone at Glenbard West's Kafka invite on Saturday. He won three events.

48.7 Winning time turned in by Westmont's Annie Carlson in the 300-meter hurdles in a recent meet against Walther Christian and Hope Academy.

Games to watch

BASEBALL:
The front runners in the West Suburban Gold, Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South start a three-game series at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Downers Grove.

BASEBALL: Westmont caps a pivotal Interstate Eight Conference series when it hosts Coal City at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
