WOODRIDGE – Newly acquired state grant money will be used to enhance security at Woodridge School District 68 schools, according to administrators.

District 68 was notified earlier this month it would receive $68,000 as part of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency’s (IEMA) Illinois School and Campus Safety Grant Program.

The money will be used to reinforce windows at all seven of District 68's schools, according to District 68 Assistant Superintendent of Business Kevin Wegner.

Wegner said a 3M film that reinforces windows by making them more difficult to break will be applied.

Elementary and secondary school districts across the state were eligible to apply for the funding for security projects. Wegner said District 68 received amount of funding it had requested.

"[The $68,000] was our preliminary estimate for the cost of the projects," he said. "We haven't gone to a contractor yet, but we expect to have a better idea of what the true cost is by late May."

The windows will be reinforced by the beginning of next school year, Wegner added.

Subject matter experts, consisting of representatives from state and local emergency management, academia, law enforcement, private security and school security, developed the criteria and reviewed the grant applications, according to a release.

Almost 450 school districts and campuses received $25 million to finance more than 1,300 security enhancement projects in schools and institutions of higher learning across Illinois, the release said.
