York's Alex Pedote delivers a pitch during the Dukes' May 2 home game against Glenbard West. Pedote allowed just one hit in that game and has been a key pitcher for the Dukes this spring.

Every spring offers a chance for baseball and softball players to impact their teams more than they ever have before. Here are a few of the players having breakout seasons on the diamond.

Michael Bieterman

School: Timothy Christian

Class: Freshman

Position: Catcher/pitcher

Impact: Hitting behind strong returners Cole Miller and Mike Wieringa, Bieterman has emerged as a solid bat in the Trojans' lineup. As of Wednesday, he was hitting .323 on the season with eight RBIs in eight games in May.

Kaylee Biscan

School: Timothy Christian

Class: Sophomore

Position: Pitcher/shortstop

Impact: Biscan went through some growing pains on the varsity team last year, hitting just .188. Things are much different this season. She has more than doubled her batting average and was hitting .396 through Tuesday.

Sarah Maciejewski

School: York

Class: Sophomore

Position: Infield

Impact: She didn't even start the season on the varsity team with York, but Maciejewski has made an impact since getting the call up. Playing as a replacement for injured players, Maciejewski has made a claim for a permanent spot by hitting .325.

Gabby Magnifico

School: York

Class: Sophomore

Position: Infield/outfield

Impact: Magnifico joined the varsity team late during her freshman season and saw some time, but as a full-time starter this season she has done a little bit of everything and done all of it well. While playing shortstop or corner outfield as needed, she is hitting .322 with 30 runs scored.

Alex Pedote

School: York

Class: Senior

Position: Pitcher

Impact: After stringing together quality starts as a midweek starter, Pedote has earned some innings in conference games.

In his first conference start, Pedote limited Glenbard West to no runs and only one hit in a five-inning run rule victory and recently held Hinsdale South without an earned run in six innings on May 8.

Sean Sutton

School: IC Catholic

Class: Senior

Position: Pitcher/shortstop

Impact: Sutton has proven to be a quality No. 2 starter behind ace Clark Brinkman. So far this season, Sutton has a 6-1 record and a 2.10 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 30 innings of work.
