Letter: Roskam 'wrong or misleading' on Obamacare

Published: Friday, May 23, 2014 5:32 p.m. CDT

To the editor:

As usual, I was amused by Peter Roskam’s less than transparent “views” on Obamacare. As was the case with his previous views on Obamacare, Mr. Roskam’s comments published on May 8 were wrong or misleading.

Before May 8, it was widely reported that more than 8 million Americans has enrolled and that the three major insurers, Wellpoint, Aetna and our own Blue Cross Blue Shield had told members of congress that 85 percent to 90 percent of those that had enrolled had paid their first premium.

Mr. Roskam’s less than objective accusation that the administration had fudged the number of enrollees proved to be wrong. His less than objective accusation that the Obama administration “is hiding information (and) dissembling facts ... all in service of their own political needs” was wrong.

In fact, Mr. Roskam’s statement that only 67 percent of enrollees had paid their first premium was what was misleading. He made that statement knowing that the number had not been ratified by the insurers and that it did not take into account the surge of enrollees who enrolled at the end of March.

History has shown that it is Mr. Roskam and his fellow Republican members of congress that have hid information and dissembled misleading information (not facts) all in service of their political needs about the Affordable Care Act.

History will show that in addition to his support for the Iraq war, huge deficient spending during the Bush presidency, deregulation of the banking industry, huge increases in corporate welfare and the unlimited deregulation of the so-called right to bear arms, his support for the malicious efforts to destroy what was the Republican’s proposed option to provide every American with affordable healthcare, is wrong.
