WEST CHICAGO – Community High School in West Chicago recently named two students PeaceBuilder of the Month and Student of the Month for May.

West Chicago resident and member of the Class of 2014 Austin Kordik was nominated for the Student of the Month recognition for being an exemplary student-athlete throughout his high school career, according to a school news release.

"He is respected by his peers and teachers and always does his best in any endeavor he undertakes," the release stated.

Kordik is an Illinois State Scholar and member of the Foreign Language Honor Society. He was named Academic All-Conference, and he was on the honor roll all four years of high school.

As a student, Kordik was very involved in extracurricular activities while maintaining high academic achievement, according to the release.

He was involved in wrestling his freshman and sophomore years and earned a place on the varsity team sophomore year. He received the Iron Man award both years and a coach’s award his sophomore year.

Kordik also played baseball his sophomore, junior and senior years.

Outside of athletics, the Student of the Month served as a student ambassador for two years, member of InterAct Club for two years and member of Future Business Leaders of America for one year.

Kordik plans to study business at Hope College in Holland, Mich. He earned a partial scholarship to play baseball there.

When asked about his favorite high school memory, Kordik said playing baseball under Coach McCarthy and being with all his great teammates, the release stated.

Kordik’s advice for future Community High School students is: “If you need help with homework or just the class in general, go in and ask for help. Teachers are always willing to help you.”

Junior Laura Perez of West Chicago was chosen as PeaceBuilder of the Month for her upbeat attitude and the way she often assists struggling classmates, according to a school news release.

"Laura contributes to the sense of community at WeGo," the release stated.

To Perez, peace is when people can unite and work together, according to the release.

Perez feels there are a lot of people in her life who model peace. She says that often she finds the most influence from strangers and their random acts of kindness, the release stated.

Perez's favorite quote is by Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Perez is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, and her favorite academic subject is math. After high school, Perez hopes to attend a university and major in marketing.

Community High School congratulates both students on their accomplishments and wishes them the best of luck in future endeavors.
