With the school year behind us, I’d like to thank our students and community for making this another memorable year filled with tremendous achievements. Over the past year, we have solidified our relationship with our community members. We are well aware that we wouldn’t be where we are today without their ongoing support. For that, I thank you.

I would also like to congratulate our graduating class of 2014 on their incredible accomplishment. We hope everyone enjoyed the surprise gift placed on the front lawns of all Morton graduates on June 7. Several teachers and community members volunteered their Saturday afternoon to help put up over 1,700 lawn signs.

The signs read: “Congratulations Morton Graduate Class of 2014," and were placed throughout Berwyn, Cicero, Forest View, Lyons and Stickney. We are very proud of our newly minted Morton alumni. We wish each and every graduate the absolute best as they embark on their new journey.

As superintendent of J. Sterling Morton High School, I am given the opportunity to meet students from all walks of life. I’d like to take a moment to recognize a few of our students who have exceeded all expectations and made their school and community members extremely proud.

Weisner Perez will be returning to Morton West this upcoming fall as a senior. Weisner has been drafted to play basketball for the Dominican National Team. He will participate in the FIBAAmerica U-18 tournament on June 20.

Janet Magana, a Morton East student, had the privilege of meeting Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and President Barack Obama. Research she conducted for several nonprofit organizations over the school year earned her this honor.

Niquan Dawson is our new student board of education member. Niquan has an admirable work ethic and is a valuable addition to the board. I am confident that Niquan will achieve much this upcoming year as the student voice on the board.

I want to wish everyone a great and safe summer. I look forward to seeing everyone back this upcoming fall to see how much more we can accomplishment together.
