ELMHURST – Retired Elmhurst Police Chief William Payne died Wednesday morning at Lexington Health Care in Elmhurst.

Payne passed away peacefully at 103 years of age, according to an email from Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth.

Ruth expressed the department's sadness at hearing Payne, who served as chief from 1968 to 1978, had died.

"He was still a policeman at heart," said Ruth, who would occasionally visit Payne for lunch along with other Elmhurst chiefs.

Services will be held Tuesday. A viewing will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 S. York St. A mass will follow at 10:45 a.m. at Visitation Church, 779 S. York St.

An Elmhurst Police Department honor guard will be present.
