ELMHURST – More than 200 people from around the world will meet at Elmhurst College for a seminar exploring the shared beliefs of Muslims and Christians.

The World Community for Christian Meditation will sponsor the annual John Main Seminar, a conference designed to spread understanding and foster peace between faith communities. The seminar is held in a different country every year, according to a news release.

Titled “Muslims and Christians: Listeners for the Word,” the event will go beyond what separates the two religions, to what beliefs they share, the release said.

Daniel Madigan will lead the seminar at Elmhurst College from July 24 to 27. Madigan is director of graduate studies in the theology department at Georgetown University and senior fellow of Georgetown’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.

Laurence Freeman, director of the World Community for Christian Meditation, will lead a silent retreat titled, "Changing Patterns: The Power of Stillness and Silence in Meditation," from July 21 through 24. The retreat will welcome attendees from as far away as New Zealand to take part in talks, reflection, silence, and meditation, the release said.

Most recently, Freeman has taught meditation courses at Georgetown University, Google’s headquarters in California and at the Meditatio Centre in London, the release stated.
