Semifinals on tap in Lockport Regional

Bellair retires first 17 in Lockport win

LOCKPORT – Semifinals are scheduled Wednesday afternoon at Ed Flink Field in the Lockport Regional of the Phil Lawler Classic summer baseball tournament.

Joliet Catholic beat Plainfield North 10-1 in Tuesday's quarterfinals and will face the winner of Wednesday morning's game between Plainfield South and Plainfield Central at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ed Flink Field.

Providence fell to Champaign Central in a play-in game Tuesday and Plainfield South then beat Champaign, setting up the all-Plainfield quarterfinal between South and Central that will be played at 10 a.m.

The other semifinal at 7 p.m. will pit Sandburg, a 12-6 winner over Lincoln-Way East, against Lockport, which eliminated Andrew 8-0 as Cole Bellair retired the first 17 Thunderbolts.

Scores from earlier in the tournament: Plainfield Central 3, Minooka 1; Plainfield North 8, Lemont 1; Andrew 6, Joliet West 1; Lincoln-Way Central 8, Joliet Central 5; JCA 1, Lincoln-Way North 0; Sandburg 11, Bradley 4; Lincoln-Way East 7, Tinley Park 0; Lincoln-Way East 7, Lincoln-Way West 6; Lockport 10, Lincoln-Way Central 0.

The regional title game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. The winner will advance to next week's state tournament at Naperville.

<subhead> 14U Crest Hill Region <subhead>

Oak Park won the 14U Crest Hill Pony Region Tournament with a 5-2 victory over Crest Hill in the winner-take-all game to advance to the Zone Tournament at Bay City, Mich.

Crest Hill was leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, when Oak Park scored four runs on two walks, a hit batter, a balk and two infield hits. Isaac Gonzalez and Isaiah Zaragoza had hits for Crest Hill.

Crest Hill forced the final game when it beat Oak Park 8-5 in a thrilling eight-inning game. The hosts scored three runs in the top of the eighth on hits by Nathan Magolan, RJ Toth, Eddie Valdez and Zaragoza. Ethan Conklin drove in the winning run with a suicide squeeze bunt.

Zaragoza picked up the victory. He pitched the final four innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out six.

Earlier, Oak Park beat Romeoville 12-2 and blanked Crest Hill 10-0. Crest Hill then beat Romeoville 10-0 as Zaragoza tossed a one-hitter, struck out nine and chipped in a basses-loaded triple. RJ Toth, Nick Quattrochi and James Epting also had hits for Crest Hill.

<subhead> 12U Crest Hill Section <subhead>

Crest Hill went 1-2 and was eliminated from the 12U Crest Hill Bronco Section Tournament.

Crest Hill opened with a 14-4 win over Chicago AFCA. Eric Reum and Dustin Lelak combined to pitch the win. Michael Mumme had two hits. Roman Esquivel, Noah Magolan, Aaron Darlin and Reum also had hits.

Crest Hill then lost to Chicago AFCA 19-3 and to Clifton Central 6-1.
