Fire district to begin grid sign review program

LAKE BARRINGTON – Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District officials have implemented a public safety review program to ensure that the green numbered signs dotting the district's 48-square mile landscape continue to help firefighters and paramedics deliver fast, effective emergency service, according to a news release.

Twice a year, officials will conduct a district-wide inspection to identify locations where signs are damaged or missing, and arrange to have them immediately replaced, the release states.

The signs are based on a grid address system used by emergency dispatchers. The information on each sign helps responders accurately identify home locations throughout the district, where addresses are based on postal rural route numbers and are often out of numerical sequence, explained assistant fire chief Jim Kreher.

"In situations where minutes can mean the difference between life or death, those signs play an essential role in helping us quickly reach those in need," Kreher said. "The grid sign review program will ensure that the signs continue to fulfill the role for which they were intended."

District officials have contracted with Algonquin Township to produce the replacement signs – part of the district's ongoing efforts to maximize efficiency, reduce operational overlap, and save taxpayers money, the release states.

Residents who observe damaged signs may report them to Kreher at 224-848-4800 or jkreher@bcfpd.us; or Capt.. Angela Grandgeorge at 224-848-4871 or agrandgeorge@bcfpd.us for immediate replacement.
